Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor was one of my most anticipated
reads for this year. I was blown away by Taylor’s writing style when I stumbled
upon the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy last year (if you enjoy YA and
fantasy, I HIGHLY recommend), and couldn’t wait to see what she had in store
for readers this time around.
Lazlo Strange is a
librarian, who has been chosen by a dream. When he was little, a city of
folklore and mystery had its name forgotten, only to be replaced by the name of
“Weep.” It is his dream to find the city, and to solve its mysteries. At the
same time, this is also a story about Sarai, a young woman who has lived her
life in exile. Their paths lead them on a journey with magic, legends, romance
(but not too much), tragedy, and everything else you could hope for in a book.
Taylor has a way of
writing that you seldom see in YA literature. Her words themselves are magic.
They are beautiful. And her imagination. I love her imagination. She creates
such unique worlds with legends and history that are rich and compelling, and
all the while challenging you on defining what a monster is, and the lines
between right and wrong.
While this novel was a
little slow, it is the first of two in a series. I have a feeling that the
second one is where all of the action will take place, but the spell has been cast
in this one. Sure to delight any fantasy reader.
